This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday July 8th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was on the west side of Lake Harriet in Minneapolis on July 4th.

Migrant shorebirds continue to trickle through, and in addition to the many Lesser Yellowlegs being reported, several BAIRD'S SANDPIPER were found on July 5th at Fink Lake in Stearns County. This is about 2 1/2 miles south and 1 1/2 miles east of the town of Cold Spring.

On July 7th Ed Hite heard a calling NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL in Washington County where the Kinnikenec River joins the St, Croix.

Jack Sprenger reports that a WHITE-EYED VIREO -- first found on June 21st -- was still present on July 4th. This was at a rustic camp site located near Brown County road 13 in the northwest part of Flandrau State Park.

In Rochester, Olmsted County, a CAROLINA WREN was still at Leslie Kottke's feeder on July 8th. Please call Leslie before visiting.

A HOODED WARBLER was seen by Mary Wyatt on the evening of July 1st and again on the 2nd at her house southeast of Detroit Lakes in Becker County.

The HENSLOW'S SPARROW found last week at Afton State Park in Washington County was still present on July 5th. From the entrance road, just before the parking area take the dirt road leading to the group camps. A short distance down this road look for the grass hiking trail on the right. This trail passes a large grassy field where the bird was found.
