BIRDING REPORT:

In the Beltrami Island State Forest, Lake of the Woods Co., along the Thompson Forest Road, CONNECTICUT WARBLERS have again been reported this past week.

Three GREAT GRAY OWLS are being seen along Hwy. 310 north of Roseau, in Roseau Co. The best area to search is the last two miles of the road, heading north, before reaching the Canadian border.

At the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, Marshall Co., the first MALLARD broods are appearing. Other interesting birds reported include COMMON LOON, EARED GREBES, RED-NECKED GREBES, TUNDRA SWAN, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW. SHORT-EARED OWLS are seen in the evenings near the intersection of Co. Rds. 7 and 12, just west of the refuge. Interesting "non-feathered" critters reported are timber wolf and black bear.

At Old Mill State Park in Marshall Co., a family of LONG-EARED OWLS are being seen evenings in the pine plantation by the park office. Other birds reported there include RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS.

A BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE was seen just south of the town of Ogema, Becker Co. along Hwy. 59 on May 30th.

At Lake Alice in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail Co., four SNOWY EGRETS remain in the area of the heron colony. The best time to see them is after 8:00 p.m.

At the Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge a few species of SHOREBIRDS remain, although numbers are dwindling.
