A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen along the Hiwood Road in the Beltrami Island State Forest, Lake of the Woods County by Gretchen Mehmel on November 1st.
Three SNOWY OWLS were reported this week. Ross Hier found one along U.S. Hwy. 2 in the Tilden Farms area of Polk Co., just west of Mentor. Another was found injured east of Gatzke and sent to the Raptor Center in St. Paul and the other was found dead just south of Roseau, in Roseau Co.
>From Oak Island, Lake of the Woods, on November 2nd, Joan Undahl reported COMMON LOON and BALD EAGLE. Also seen on the mainland are increasing numbers of SNOW BUNTINGS, reported by Celeste Colson.
On the 30th, Joe Gartner reported AMERICAN WOODCOCK, NORTHERN SHRIKE, NORTHERN CARDINAL, AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS & HARRIS'S SPARROWS, from the Regional Science Center and Buffalo River State Park in Clay Co.
On the 29th, Shelley Steva had a NORTHERN SHRIKE at her home in Pennington Co. In Kittson Co. that day, just east of Lake Bronson State Park, she found BALD EAGLE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and NORTHERN HARRIER and near the town of Halma, SNOW GEESE & CANADA GEESE.
On the 30th, Mary Broten reported BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN HARRIER, LONG-EARED OWL, SANDHILL CRANE, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS & HARRIS'S SPARROWS, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, PURPLE FINCH and SNOW BUNTING from Old Mill State Park in Kittson Co.
An immature CATTLE EGRET was reported on the 31st by Dan Thimgan. It was seen feeding on a lawn just outside Fergus Falls in Otter Tail Co.
At the Crookston Lagoons in Polk Co. on November 3rd, approximately 100 TUNDRA SWANS and 25 SNOW GEESE were present, along with a pair of GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED DUCK, LESSER SCAUP and two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS.
The Holters, north of Detroit Lakes in Becker Co. hosted A SPOTTED TOWHEE and a pair of NORTHERN CARDINALS this past week.
At Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge in Becker Co., TUNDRA SWANS and TRUMPETER SWANS and a variety of diving ducks are still present, along with many AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, DARK-EYED JUNCOS and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS. Seven SNOW BUNTINGS were seen on the west side of Round Lake at the Tamarac Resort.
On Halloween night, Mark Eikren, who owns Becker Pet & Garden in Detroit Lakes, Becker Co. was at the store doing paper work. As he was leaving, he noticed a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL sitting on the step railing outside the building. He was thrilled to be able to observe it for a couple of minutes before it flew away!
