HARRIS'S SPARROWS are moving through the northwest in good numbers this past week, with reports from Detroit Lakes, Becker Co. (where Bruce Besse was thrilled to have up to a dozen birds in his yard) to Warroad in Roseau County. Other migrants finding their way north include BLACK TERN, NORTHERN ORIOLE, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, SCARLET TANAGER and other birds found later in this report.

Beth Siverhus reports that GREAT GRAY OWLS are still being seen along CR 5, south of Warroad in Roseau County; three birds were seen on May 4th.

Bob O'Connor found a LITTLE BLUE HERON along the river in Gooseberry Park in Moorhead, Clay County on the 8th.

A WHITE-FACED IBIS was reported by Joel Huener, on April 30th , north of Thief Lake WMA headquarters along Marshall CR 49. However, it couldn't be relocated on subsequent visits.

Doug Johnson near Bemidji in Beltrami County reported BLUE-HEADED VIREO on the 1st, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER on the 6th and FORSTER'S TERN on the 7th. He also heard a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL calling from his yard the first week of May.

Jeanie Joppru and Shelley Steva birded on May 5th, and in Red Lake County some interesting observations included TRUMPETER SWAN, AMERICAN AVOCET, MARBLED GODWIT, SANDHILL CRANE, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE and GRASSHOPPER SPARROW. The same day at rice paddies in Polk County, they found 1000 TUNDRA SWANS still present. Also, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD. In Pennington County, OSPREY, MERLIN and SANDHILL CRANE were seen.

On May 6th, Shelley Steva found a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE in Pennington County, near Thief River Falls. And on the 8th, Jeanie Joppru found a ROSS'S GOOSE and SHORT-EARED OWL, also in Pennington County.

Blane Klemek reported from the Wetlands, Pines and Prairie Audubon Sanctuary near Warren in Polk County. On the 7th, birds present included SORA, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, HOUSE WREN, SEDGE WREN, MARSH WREN, OVENBIRD, TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, EASTERN BLUEBIRD and a COMMON RAVEN.

Dorothy Russell has been birding Polk County over the past week and some of her observations include: At the Crookston Sewage Ponds, 4 AMERICAN AVOCETS, LEAST SANDPIPER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, and LARK SPARROW. At the Pembina Trail Preserve: SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, UPLAND SANDPIPER, BOBOLINK and CLAY-COLORED SPARROW. Other observations included FORSTER'S TERNS, BROWN THRASHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and BLACKPOLL WARBLER.

Alma Ronningen in Otter Tail County reported SWAINSON'S THRUSH on the 6th, INDIGO BUNTING on the 8th, VEERY on the 9th and BLACKPOLL WARBLER on the 10th.

Larry Hanson found a WESTERN GREBE on Seabold Lake in Hamden Township of Becker County on the 9th.

Barb Adams birded at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge in Becker County on the 5th. Interesting sightings included BARRED OWLS, YELLOW WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER. Other birds observed at the refuge this week included: LEAST BITTERN, CHIMNEY SWIFT, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, GRAY CATBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, CLIFF SWALLOW, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, SCARLET TANAGER and warblers including GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, OVENBIRD and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.
