This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, August 10th, sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Lakes Area Birding Club. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Although migration has obviously begun, reports from the northwest have been few, with shorebirds still the hot topic. Hummingbirds are on the move, along with a few warblers such as Nashville, yellow, chestnut-sided, pine, black-and-white, American redstart and common yellowthroat. Scarlet tanagers are being seen in eclipse plumage. Other birds reported include osprey, sandhill crane and black-billed cuckoo.

An August 3rd shorebird report from Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge showed a good variety of birds, including: SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a variety of sandpipers including SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and STILT SANDPIPER, both SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, COMMON SNIPE, and WILSON'S PHALAROPE.

A SPRUCE GROUSE was reported from Dick's Parkway just north of the Roseau River on August 2nd. This is in the Red Lake Wildlife Management Area, Lake of the Woods County.

A few shorebirds were seen at the Mikelson Waterfowl Production Area in Otter Tail County on the 9th, including GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, STILT SANDPIPER and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. And at the Battle Lake water treatment ponds, also in Otter Tail County, shorebirds present included KILLDEER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER and (four) BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER. Other birds seen in the area included FRANKLIN'S GULL, BONAPARTE'S GULL, FORSTER'S TERN, and a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK.
