It has been a quiet week in Northwestern Minnesota but some spring migrants are showing up. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was reported in Ottertail County 20 miles north of Fergus Falls.Alma Ronningen also reports that AMERICAN ROBINS and COMMON GRACKLES have also returned to Ottertail County.
>From Marshall County, Mary Broten, reported CANADA GOOSE, and SANDHILL CRANES have been returning , and among the winter residents were COMMON REDPOLLS, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, HAIRY WOODPECKER, and DOWNY WOODPECKER . Also in Marshall County, Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge staff noted some CANADA GEESE and MALLARDS are trickling back.
Zeann Linder saw an AMERICAN ROBIN in Thief River Falls, Pennington County, this week. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS also have been spotted searching for any remaining fruit in Pennington County.
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen on the weekend in both Lake of the Woods and Roseau Counties. COMMON RAVEN and BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES were also seen.A BALD EAGLE was seen at Norris Camp in Lake of the Woods County on Sunday, March 24th. GRAY JAYS are coming to the feeders there also.
Two SNOWY OWLS were reported east of the airport at Roseau on March 23rd. This is the same spot that one was seen on the Christmas bird count on Dec. 29th.
