This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, April 26, 2002, sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Lakes Area Birding Club. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

With RECORD-SETTING cold temperatures this week, we made very little progress with spring migration in northwestern Minnesota. However, large numbers of TREE SWALLOWS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were reported 4/24 through 4/26.

On the 21st, Dennis Wiesenborn found a ROCK WREN in Moorhead, Clay County, near the 12th Ave. N. toll bridge. Efforts to re-find the bird failed, however.

In Becker County, at Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge, a flock of about 50 SNOW GEESE were observed by Bob Scherzer on the 25th. That same day the snow geese left, but several members of the Fargo-Moorhead Audubon Chapter observed a ROSS'S GOOSE which had apparently stayed behind! The bird was not re-found on the 26th, however. Other birds at Hamden Slough observed by Bob Scherzer, Mary and Bill Wyatt this week included EARED GREBE, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, WILLET, MARBLED GODWIT, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS. At Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, birds observed this week included AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, PEREGRINE FALCON, RUFFED GROUSE, SANDHILL CRANE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, NORTHERN FLICKER (RED-SHAFTED), EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, HERMIT THRUSH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, EASTERN TOWHEE and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. Birds reported elsewhere in Becker County included NORTHERN CARDINAL, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.

Rick Julian reported from Rydell National Wildlife Refuge in Polk County this week that they have mounted a camera inside a wood duck box and activity can be viewed on a monitor at the visitor center. So far, 3 eggs have been laid. Rick and refuge intern Becky Ekstein also reported that SANDHILL CRANE numbers at Glacial Ridge numbered in the thousands. Also in Polk County, Shelley Steva found 200+ LAPLAND LONGSPURS near the junction of U.S. Hwy. 2 and State Hwy. 32 on the 24th. Norm Carroll found two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS in Polk County on the 26th.

At the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County, Jeanie Joppru and Maggie Anderson reported HORNED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE and MARBLED GODWIT this week. At Old Mill State Park, also in Marshall County, Mary Broten observed a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, which is (so far) uncommon in that area.

Thanks to the MANY people who shared sightings this week!
