This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, October 11, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Unfortunately, that 5th-state-record BLACK-THROATED SPARROW in Knife River reported on last Sunday's unscheduled update has not been seen since mid-afternoon on Oct 7. However, there have been several other birds of interest seen since then in Duluth and vicinity, including RED-THROATED LOON, SURF SCOTER, BLACK SCOTER, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, WESTERN KINGBIRD, 2 TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES, BOHEMIAN WAXWING, RUFOUS-SIDED TOWHEE, 2 FIELD SPARROWS, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, and COMMON REDPOLL.
A Red-throated Loon, presumably a different individual than the one here in Sept, was seen on the lake side of Park Point Oct 9. All 3 species of scoters were also found at various locations on L Superior earlier this week.
Jim Lind found a Western Kingbird along Hwy 61 in Lake Co Oct 9, and it was still present today; the location is just NE of the Larsmont Rd jct, which is between Knife River and Two Harbors.
A Townsend's Solitaire was seen briefly at Hawk Ridge Oct 6, and another was with some robins on the 7th in Cook Co at the Lutsen Sea Villas, which are between Tofte and Lutsen.
The first Bohemian Waxwing and Com Redpoll of the season were also reported at Hawk Ridge on the 6th.
An unexpected Rufous-sided Towhee and a Le Conte's Sparrow were both at Stoney Pt Oct 7. Also unexpected were the 2 Field Sparrow reports: one was at Park Point near the utility buildings just S of the airport runway on Oct 6, and the other was in Knife River yesterday.
A White-winged Crossbill was in Knife River Oct 7, and there were single-observer reports of both Red and White-winged crossbills at Park Point on the 6th.
Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, this Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on October 18. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.
The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota
Ornithologists' Union (MOU) as a service to its members. For more
