This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 7, 2002, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Mike Hendrickson spotted a juvenile gray GYRFALCON on the Peavey elevator in the Duluth harbor on the morning of the 4th.
The LONG-TAILED DUCK was reported again this week, most recently by Nancy Jackson on the 6th. The three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were also still present, and if they continue to be seen, they could be the first record of over-wintering for this species. There are still over 500 Goldeneyes in the Canal Park area.
Peder Svingen surveyed the gulls at the Superior Landfill on the second. The 1225 HERRING GULLS represent an unusually high number for this time of year, when past counts have found 300-400 gulls. There were also 17 GLAUCOUS GULLS (15 adult, 2 1st yr), 5 THAYER'S GULLS (3 adult, 2 1st yr) and one adult ICELAND GULL.
The only report this week from central St. Louis County was of 2 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS seen 150 yds down a logging road that goes south from Cty Rd 16, 2.4 miles west of the jct with 110.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, February 14th. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.
The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU) as a service to its members.
