This is the Duluth Birding Report for Wednesday, June 26th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Chris Benson reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on Three Mile Island on Seagull Lake at the end of the Gunflint Trail on the 22nd.
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS have been seen in northern Lake County, in the burn on the south side of Hwy 1, 9 miles east of the jct. with Cty Rd 2, and in Cook County, in a burn on the Lima Grade Road off the Gunflint Trail,4 miles northeast of the Lima Mountain Rd.
BOREAL CHICKADEES nested on the Spruce Road, about four-tenths of a mile beyond Endless Waters Road. RED CROSSBILLS were reported this week from the jct. with Endless Waters Road, and from a feeder in Schroeder on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
Many observers saw GREAT GRAY OWLS near the junction of Arkola Rd (Cty Rd 52) and Owl Ave (Cty Rd 202/203) in the Sax-Zim area. Again this week, a young Great Gray was often visible near the drainage ditch that runs north and south from 52, a half-mile east of Owl Ave. BOREAL CHICKADEES were seen in the same area.
BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES nested again this year near the Meadowlands sewage ponds, just southwest of town. In Aitkin County, YELLOW RAILS and NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS continue to call at the McGregor Marsh. Dory Spence reported a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO at the Tofte City Park, which is right on Lake Superior in Tofte.
Because birding activity slows this time of year, the next scheduled update of this report will by Thursday, July 11th. However, if something noteworthy turns up before then, I will update the report.
