This is the Duluth birding report for Wednesday, April 24, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On Friday the 19th, Frank Nicoletti and Dave Carman spotted a FERRUGINOUS HAWK at the Thompson Hill overlook. This was only the second record for St. Louis County. The bird was not seen after the first sighting.

Kristen Stuchis saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER near 37th on Minnesota Point. Uwe Kausch reported a SANDHILL CRANE above Lakewood Township. Sally Stout spotted a flock of LAPLAND LONGSPURS near Two Harbors. Gordy Martenson reported increased numbers of EVENING GROSBEAKS, also in Lakewood Township.

New spring migrants reported this week include RUDDY DUCK, AMERICAN COOT, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, CHIPPING SPARROW, and SWAMP SPARROW.

I will be surveying the Duluth and Superior harbors for Piping Plovers this spring. If you see a Piping Plover, please notify me, Dave Benson, immediately at 728-5812.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, May 2. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.
