This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, September 12th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On the 11th, Dave Grosshuesch banded a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER at Hawk Ridge. This is only the second county record of this species.
Kate Nicoletti saw a female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER at Hawk Ridge along the Amity Creek Trail. It would be worth looking for this bird along this trail or in the pine plantation about a mile east of the main overlook.
There are still three GREAT EGRETS at 40th Ave West. Several observers reported good numbers of ducks and sparrows at 40th, with only a few shorebirds remaining. Kim Eckert found a couple of ALDER FLYCATCHERS at 40th. Jim Barrett found 22 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, plus SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and a dowitcher at Morgan Park in West Duluth.
Jim Lind and Kim Eckert had 17 species of warblers behind the lighthouse at Two Harbors on the 10th, including an early ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. They also found the season's first LAPLAND LONGSPUR at the Two Harbors Airport.
It has been a good week at Hawk Ridge. On the 3rd, the single day record for AMERICAN KESTRELS was broken, with a count of 747 birds. There was a good flight of 3129 raptors on the 10th, and the best day of the year so far was the 11th, when Frank Nicoletti counted 7518 raptors, including 6699 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS.
This weekend is Hawk Weekend. There will be programs at UMD on Friday evening and Saturday evening. Field trips will meet at 7:00 am both Saturday and Sunday. Trips include the North Shore, Park Point, and 40th Ave West. For details, inquire at Hawk Ridge.
The next scheduled update of this report will be Thursday, September 19th; however, it may be updated earlier if something noteworthy turns up.
The telephone number for the report is (218) 728-5030, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape.
