This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, December 5th, 2002, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The first NORTHERN HAWK OWL of the season was reported perched atop a tree to the west of Interstate 35, approximately 5 miles north of the Sandstone exit on December 1. Also on the 1st, Howard Towle found a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Two Harbors near the tracks at the end of Waterfront St. A SNOWY OWL was again seen in Morgan Park on Nov. 30th. Frank Nicoletti reported a flock of around 25 RED CROSSBILLS from Lester Park in Duluth on the 4th. Scott and Nan Wisherd reported a group of PINE GROSBEAKS from the Sax Rd one mile East of Cty Rd 83.
Over 40 BALD EAGLES have been seen at the fish dump above Grand Marais off the Maple Hill Road. Jim Lind reported an adult THAYER'S GULL, along with over 1100 HERRING GULLS in the harbor on the 29th. John Ellis reported seeing more than one flock of COMMON REDPOLLS on the Gunflint Trail on the 1st.
In Duluth, Bruce Munson spotted WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS near the Fairmont St entrance to Hartley Park on the 28th, and I found two on 2nd St and 8th Ave E on the same day. Mike Hendrickson reports having three NORTHERN CARDINALS coming to his feeders in Smithville daily.
