This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, September 2nd, 2004, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On the 30th, an immature MISSISSIPPI KITE flew by the main overlook at Hawk Ridge.
On the 28th, Earl Orf reported THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS at three separate locations along Koochiching Cty Rd 13, at 2.3 miles south of the jct. with Cty Rd 1, at 9.2 miles south of that jct., and at 9.5 miles south of that jct. He also found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER 11.1 miles south of the jct. with 1. Several observers have reported SPRUCE GROUSE and BOREAL CHICKADEES along this road.
Janet Riegle reported a WHIMBREL at 40th Ave West in Duluth on the 28th. On the same day, she saw an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN in the harbor.
Deb Buria-Falkowski reported 2 GREAT GRAY OWLS on Owl Ave in Sax-Zim, 0.3 mile south of the jct. with Overton Rd. She also found a GREAT EGRET on Manganika Lake south of Virginia.
Jim Lind saw a WESTERN GREBE on Agate Bay in Two Harbors from the 26th to the 28th. On the evening of the 30th, Jim counted 436 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flying by Agate Bay. On the same evening, he saw 3 STILT SANDPIPERS.
