This is the Duluth birding report for Sunday, December 22nd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union. And this tape is being updated today to report on the results of the December 21st Duluth Christmas Bird Count.
Although the number of birds seemed to be down almost everywhere the birders went yesterday, especially during the morning snowfall, we still surprisingly managed to come up with an above average total of at least 56 species. Most notable among them were a:
@ Harlequin Duck @ Oldsquaws @ Snowy Owls @ Northern Hawk Owl @ Boreal Chickadees and an unexpected @ Harris' Sparrow
As I read through the list of species recorded yesterday, please notice if there are any birds missing from this list that you know were actually seen in Duluth yesterday and give me a call.
@ Canada Goose @ American Black Duck @ Mallard @ Harlequin Duck - male, at the mouth of the Lester River @ Oldsquaws - two, first seen near the French River and later in the day closer to Lakewood Road on Lake Superior @ Common Goldeneye @ Bufflehead @ Common Merganser @ Bald Eagle @ Sharp-shinned Hawk - late one for the season @ Red-tailed Hawk @ American Kestrel - three in the harbor area @ Ruffed Grouse @ Ring-billed Gull - a late bird at Canal Park @ Herring Gull @ Rock Dove @ Mourning Dove @ Snow Owls - four, all in the Duluth harbor area @ Northern Hawk Owl - at the corner of Jean Duluth Road and Riley Road, discovered on Friday... The other Hawk Owl, the one in the count circle on airport road just west of Rice Lake Road which had been seen Friday could not be relocated on count day. @ Barred Owl @ Downy Woodpecker @ Hairy Woodpecker @ Northern Flicker - late bird at a feeder @ Pileated Woodpecker @ Blue Jay @ American Crow @ Common Raven @ Black-capped Chickadee @ Boreal Chickadee - two, near Eagle Lake, just west of Jean Duluth Road @ Red-breasted Nuthatch @ White-breasted Nuthatch @ Brown Creeper @ Golden-crowned Kinglet @ American Robin @ Brown Thrasher - late bird at a feeder on the 4100 Block of West Calvary Rd. @ Bohemian Waxwings @ Cedar Waxwings @ Northern Shrike @ European Starlings @ Northern Cardinal @ American Tree Sparrows - two on the 200 block of Garden Street at a feeder @ White-throated Sparrow @ Harris' Sparrow - adult at a feeder on Lakewood Road between Highway 61 and Superior Street. @ Dark-eyed Junco @ Red-winged Blackbird - a late bird at the same feeder as the American Tree Sparrows on Garden Street @ Common Grackle @ Pine Grosbeak @ Purple Finch @ House Finch @ Red Crossbill @ White-winged Crossbill @ Common Redpoll @ Pine Siskins @ American Goldfinch @ Evening Grosbeak @ House Sparrow
Note that among the species that no one reported yesterday were Red-breasted Merganser, Northern Goshawk, Rough-legged Hawk, Merlin, Ring-necked Pheasant, Thayer's Gull, Glaucous Gull, Great Horned Owl, Black-backed Woodpecker, Gray Jay, Varied Thrush (although one was seen outside the count area at the Norma Lundquist feeder on the 6200 block of Ryan Road), Snow Bunting and a Hoary Redpoll. And these species have been seen on more than half of the Duluth Christmas Bird Counts in recent years. Every year there is a species or two added to our count as a result of reports called in after the count day. I would also hope the person who reported a GRAY CATBIRD yesterday would call back, because no phone number was given, nor was there any name and the only location given was 9th Avenue North.
The next update of this tape will be December 25th and this will include the results of tomorrow's (Monday 23rd) Sax-Zim Bog Christmas Bird Count. As always if you have birds to report, you may leave a message after the tone.... Beep....
