An abbreviated Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, Jan. 30, sponsored by the MOU:

SPRUCE GROUSE -- Jan 29; 6 individuals in the road on Lake Co Rd 2, 2.8 mi south of Hwy 1, or about 43 mi north of Two Harbors (Jay Hamernick); same location as two weeks ago

SHARP-TAILED GROUSE -- through last weekend, 2-15 individuals in Aitkin Co seen on several days this month budding in trees along road, especially around dawn: from Hwy 210, go north 3.6 mi on Co Rd 5 and then east on dead-end road on north side of Jenkins L; road is private and leads to Lowe residence, but birders have permission to look (fide Warren Nelson)

BOREAL OWL -- two live individuals seen near Duluth this week, but both are now apparently gone: Jan 26 & 28 on 5700 block of W Arrowhead Rd in Hermantown (not seen Jan 29 or 30; Bernie Paszak); for several days through Jan 29 on Leimer Rd just southeast of Carlton (not seen today; Candy Whelan)

GREAT GRAY OWL -- most recent reports (m.ob.): in Duluth & vicinity in woods behind Woodland Middle School, on Homestead Rd just north of Hwy 61, and at Stony Point; in Sax-Zim Bog 1.5 mi north of Sax on Co Rd 7, 2 mi north of Co Rd 133 on Co Rd 7, and 0.5 mi north of Meadowlands on Co Rd 29; in Carlton Co at 285 Koski Rd in Esko (2 individuals; no other directions given); in Aitkin Co 1 mi east of Co Rd 5 on Co Rd 18 (2 individuals), 2 mi south of Co Rd 18 on Co Rd 5, on north-south road west of Gun L (2 individuals; from Palisade go 3 mi south, 3 mi west, 1 mi south), and on Co Rd 31 north of Tamarack (mileage not given)

NORTHERN HAWK OWL -- most recent reports (m.ob.): in Duluth & vicinity at jct of Bergquist & Lismore Rds (go 1.5 mi north from Hwy 61 on Bergquist), and in Superior just south of 28th St on Hammond Ave; in Aitkin Co 4 mi north of McGregor on Hwy 65, 1.6 mi north of Hwy 210 on Co Rd 78, 0.7 mi south and 0.7 mi east of jct of Co Rds 5 & 18 (2 individuals), and 4 individuals from 6.5 to 10.5 mi north of Aitkin on Co Rd 1

SNOWY OWL -- most easily seen in Superior near hospital on Tower Ave and near Mariner Mall on 28th St or Hill Ave (m.ob.), and in Aitkin Co with 4 individuals from 3 to 9.4 mi north of Aitkin on Co Rd 1 (Warren Nelson)

VARIED THRUSH -- Jan 27-28 (and probably still present), feeder at 2320 E 3rd St in Duluth (visible from alley; Jeanette Lang); also still present at Pat Thomas residence, 6219 E Superior St

BOHEMIAN WAXWING -- only recent reports in Duluth on 6200 block of E Superior St, and on Scenic Hwy 61 near the French River

PURPLE FINCH -- continues much more common than normal this winter, as evidenced by at least 170 individuals (!) at one time on Jan 27 at Carla Larson's feeders, 2 mi south of Cotton on Hwy 53
