This is the Duluth birding report for Thursday, October 30th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Because there have been so many birds of interest seen last weekend in Duluth and up the north shore of Lake Superior, this tape was updated last Sunday evening, the 26th. Among the birds mentioned then which might possibly still be present now, were: a PACIFIC LOON in Duluth on the bay side of the Park Point recreation area; all 3 scoters up the north shore with SURF SCOTERS on the Burlington Bay or east side of Two Harbors; and BLACK SCOTER and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER at Paradise Beach east of Grand Marais in Cook county; some late WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS among other shore birds at the Beaver Bay sewage ponds in Lake County; both THAYER'S GULL and GLAUCOUS GULLS at Knife River plus at least two THAYER'S GULLS in the Grand Marais harbor; a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along the pine woods trail at Hawk Ridge in Duluth; TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Grand Marais on the west side of the harbor near the municipal swimming pool and a power plant; plus another TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Two Harbors near the water treatment plant on 1st St; and a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD at the Lutsen sea villas condominiums which are located between Tofte and Lutsen along Hwy 61 in Cook county.
Since last weekend however, the birding has not been as interesting although SURF SCOTERS, THAYER'S GULL, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and CAPE MAY WARBLER were all seen in Duluth along with a very good movement of PINE GROSBEAKS and RED CROSSBILLS at Hawk Ridge. And elsewhere in northern Minnesota beyond the normal scope of this tape, a RED-THROATED LOON and a RED PHALAROPE were found.
Yesterday, the 29th, three SURF SCOTERS were reported on Lake Superior near the Lester River.
And on the same day an apparent adult THAYER'S GULL was identified although the exact location was not given.
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was present for two days this week a yard on Ryan Rd.
At the main overlook at Hawk Ridge a late CAPE MAY WARBLER was seen on the 27th. And also at the main overlook yesterday, the 29th, there was an impressive count of 460+ PINE GROSBEAKS and over 90 RED CROSSBILLS. Unfortunately the raptor migration at the ridge has been relatively uneventful this week, although GOLDEN EAGLES and NORTHERN GOSHAWKS are being seen on an almost daily basis and on some days there have been good flights of BALD EAGLES.
Normally this tape does not report on birds seen in north central or north western MN but it is worth reporting that Doug Johnson of Bemidji found a RED PHALAROPE today on Lake Bemidji in Beltrami County. The location was along county road 21 on the north side of the lake 4 miles north of Bemidji.
And Peder Svingen found a RED-THROATED LOON on Lake Winnibigoshish in Cass County on Oct 27th. To reach that location turn north off of US hwy 2 on county road 91 2.7 miles west of the town of Bena. Go .2 mile then turn northeast to the lakeshore on forest road 2074.
The next scheduled update of this tape will be Thursday Nov 6th although if the birding is as good this weekend as it was last weekend there could be an update on Sunday or Monday.
