Hello, this is the Duluth birding report for Thursday June 11, 1998.

Migration seems to be all but over in Duluth, but there are still a few shorebirds at 40th Ave. West, as well as reports in the last week of SANDHILL CRANES. And a large group of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS has been seen in several places in Duluth by different observers. There is plenty of birding to do in NE Minnesota with birds on territory and relatively easy to find.

GREAT GRAY OWLS have been seen in Sax-Zim area along County Road 7, north of Highway 133 and along County Road 213, as well as in Aitkin County on Pietz's Rd. north of County Rd 18, 4 miles east of Highway 169.

Sax-Zim is worth checking for CONNECTICUT WARBLER, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, BOREAL CHICKADEE, BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS and CAPE MAY WARBLERS, all of which have been seen in the past week.

The 12th annual Hawk Ridge Birdathon and St. Louis County Big Day was held May 30 . Highlights of that event included both RED-THROATED LOONS and PACIFIC LOONS, a late SNOW GOOSE at Interstate Island, no fewer than 24 species of shorebirds including WILLETS, WHIMBRELS, HUDSONIAN GODWITS, MARBLED GODWITS, RED KNOT, and WILSON'S PHALAROPE. A PARASITIC JAEGER at Park Point as well as the GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL that has been around this spring, 2 GREAT GRAY OWLS at Zim, and WHIP-POOR-WILL heard at Britt and on St. Louis County Road 4, and WESTERN KINGBIRD at Gary-New Duluth.

The Gunflint Boreal Birding Festival was held May 29, 30, and 31. A good selection of woodland birds were seen including 21 species of warblers.
