This is the Duluth Birding Report for Sunday, December 19, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

This tape is being updated today to report on the results of the Saturday, Dec 18, Duluth Christmas Bird Count (CBC). Although our species total of 54 is a bit lower than the average in recent years, there were still several birds of special note, including PEREGRINE FALCON, SNOWY OWL, GREAT GRAY OWL, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS, BOREAL CHICKADEE, CAPE MAY WARBLER, and HOARY REDPOLL.

The late-lingering Peregrine was in the vicinity of the grain elevators in the harbor (also lingering there later than normal were Snow Goose and Green-winged Teal). The Snowy Owl was also in the harbor area, sitting on the bay ice between Park Point and the Port Terminal. The Great Gray was N of Duluth along the archery club road , which turns W off Eagle Lake Rd between Lismore Rd and Eagle L. The N Saw-whet was seen before dawn hunting along Skyline Pkwy at Hawk Ridge. The Boreal Chickadee was along Scenic Hwy 61 at 96th Ave East, and at this same location was a most surprising imm female Cape May Warbler. It was coming to a feeder at 5101 N Shore Dr, and this might be the first record ever for this species for any Minnesota CBC. And a carefully identified Hoary Redpoll was N of Duluth at the Dawson feeder on the 5900 block of Arnold Rd.

Following is the complete list of species reported on yesterday's CBC:

If you noticed anything missing from this list which actually was seen on the 18th within the Duluth count area, please be sure to report it so it can be included on our final tally. Either leave a message after the tone at the end of this report, or contact count compiler Jim Lind in Two Harbors at 834-3435, or e-mail him at . Note especially the following species were not reported yesterday by anyone (so far), even though they are seen on most Duluth CBCs. Again, if any of these were seen on Saturday, please let us know: Bufflehead, Glaucous Gull, Mourning Dove (which had not been missed on any Duluth CBC in at least 20 years!), Great Horned Owl, Brown Creeper, Varied Thrush, Cedar Waxwing, White-throated Sparrow, Com Grackle and Red Crossbill.

The Duluth Birding Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on December 23, and it will include the results of today's Two Harbors CBC and tomorrow's Sax-Zim Bog CBC. The phone number is (218) 525-5952, and callers can leave a message if they wish after the tone at the end of the tape. Also note that a message can be left without having to wait for the birding report to end: after the tape starts playing, push 5 on a touch-tone phone, the tape will then stop, the tone will sound and you can leave your message.

The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU), the state bird club, as a service to its members.
