Though that first state record White-tailed Kite hasn't been reported for more than two weeks, now, I have a report of a SWALLOW-TAILED KITE seen briefly in the area on May 26th. This is along 50th street just north of Afton State Park in Washington County.
Tom Tustison found a TRICOLORED HERON at Hastings, Dakota County, on May 29th and it has been seen each day since then. Directions are: From the town of Hastings go east on 10th Street for approximately one mile to Progress Drive. Park here and take the paved bike trail to the north. Where this trail bends to the left go straight on the grass trail to just past the railroad tracks. Check the backwater in this area.
On May 24th Craig Menze found a SNOWY EGRET in Burnsville, Dakota County, on the east side of 185th St. in a pond just north of Marion Lake. And the LITTLE BLUE HERON is still at the Ritter Farm Park on 195th St. in Burnsville, just west of Interstate 35.
Nels Thompson found a BELL'S VIREO singing at the end of his driveway in Steele County. Go east on Steele County Road 4 from Interstate 35 for about 3/4 of a mile. Across the Straight River bridge look for house number 2328.
Chris Benson found a TRUMPETER SWAN on May 24th at the south landfill reservoir in Rochester, Olmsted County.
Barb Kull has a pair of WILSON'S PHALAROPES in a marshy area behind her house in St. Francis, Isanti County.
In Duluth as many as 30 RED-THROATED LOONS and a PACIFIC LOON were seen in the past week on Lake Superior. For additional information on these and other birds in the northeastern parts of the state, you can call the Duluth birding report at 218-525-5952.
In cooperation with the Minnesota Office of Tourism, highlights of this hotline can be heard at a toll free number which is available to callers outside the Twin Cities area. That number is 1-800-657-3700.
