This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday February 15th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
In Duluth, St. Louis County, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continues to be seen in the channel near the aerial lift bridge in Canal Park. The bird is being seen with a large flock of about 60 Common Goldeneyes.
Several BOREAL OWLS have been reported from southern Lake County in the past week. Check especially in the neighborhood around 4th Ave. and 2nd St.
A THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was found on the 9th in Lake County along the Spruce Road, which branches off state highway 1 about fourteen miles west of its junction with Lake County road 2. The bird was seen near the junction of the Spruce Road and Endless Waters Road.
This has been a good winter for the VARIED THRUSH in Minnesota. The most recent report is from Gary Noreen who has been seeing one at his home near Wild River State Park in Chisago County since late January. And Paul Warwah continues to see a Varied Thrush at his feeder in Chanhassen, Carver County.
On the 11th, Tom Tustison found male LONG-TAILED DUCK at Lock and Dam #2 in Hastings, Dakota County. It was on the river below the dam and was associating with about 100 Common Goldeneyes.
A SNOWY OWL was reported February 11th in LeSueur County, just south of Gustavus Adolphus College Campus in St. Peter. In Aitkin County a Snowy Owl was seen on the 14th a few miles north of Aitkin on highway 1, and a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was at the intersection of Aitkin County road 18 and U.S. Highway 169.
Tom Bell reported a SAVANNAH SPARROW from Carpenter Nature Center in Washington County. This is only the second winter record in Minnesota for this species. The bird was banded on February 9th.
