This is the Minnesota birding report for Saturday January 13th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCH was discovered on the 13th in Duluth at the Cargill grain elevator in the port terminal. This is quite visible just east of Garfield Ave. Birders are permitted on the Cargill property under two conditions: First, they must park by the No Trespassing sign next to the railroad tracks, then walk the up the road to the tallest part of the elevator with the obvious green-and-white "CARGILL" logo on it. Second, birders are welcome only on Saturday and Sunday.
Look for the Rosy-Finch feeding on spilled barley around the base of the elevator. If you don't find it in the road, check a few yards to the right between two sets of doors that say "danger" and "caution". Between these doors is a small alcove or recess in the building with more spilled grain on the ground where the bird also likes to feed.
An adult gray phase GYRFALCON was seen on the 11th in Virginia, St. Louis County. It was seen on the Seppi Brothers building before flying north toward the hospital. This is in addition to the Gyr being seen in the port terminal in Duluth.
The KING EIDER is still being reported from Agate Bay in Two Harbors, Lake County, along with a WESTERN GREBE. The eider is most often found near the concrete pier at the southwest corner of the harbor.
A VARIED THRUSH has been coming to the feeder of Joel Hettler of North Oaks, Ramsey County since early December. Another Varied Thrush is being seen in Freeborn County. It is visiting a feeder located about a mile and a half west of I-35 on county road 35.
That PRAIRIE FALCON was found again on the 6th at the grain elevators in south Minneapolis, which are just east of Hiawatha Ave. between 34th and 38th Streets.
A GREAT GRAY OWL was reported from Crow Wing County, along state highway 25 two miles north of Brainerd. On the 4th, Chris Benson reported a SHORT-EARED OWL at the junction of Houston County road 20 and state highway 44. A few GRAY PARTRIDGE were also seen in the area. On the 9th, GRAY PARTRIDGE were seen near St. Peter along Nicollet County Road 13 south of County Road 5.
On the 4th, a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET was seen near the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota near the Bell Museum. Other birds reported around the state include several RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, plus NORTHERN FLICKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, COMMON GRACKLE, and PINE GROSBEAK.
The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday January 18th.
