This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday April 26th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The number of migrants being reported over the past week were so numerous that I can only report on a few highlights here.
On the 26th Karol Gresser found a WHITE-FACED IBIS just southwest of Prior Lake in Scott County. The location is about 1/4 mile north of county road 10 on county road 81. However, observers searching later in the day were unable to relocate the bird.
The CLARK'S GREBE is still being seen on the west side of the Coon Rapids dam on the Hennepin-Anoka County line. It was most recently reported there on April 25th.
There was a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD in McLeod County on April 24th. It was seen by Roger and Tammy Field in the town of Hutchinson just west of the intersection of 177th and Nickle Ave.
Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were reported from a park in north Minneapolis along University Ave. just north of Lowry Ave. on the 19th. And a SNOW GOOSE was at Silvin Lake in northern Hennepin County on the 21st.
Shorebirds are beginning to appear in the state. Besides the many reports of GREATER YELLOWLEGS and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and WILSON'S PHALAROPES have been seen in several southern counties. On the 23rd a WILLET was in St. Louis Park, Hennepin County, at the junction of Pennsylvania Ave. and 16th Street. On the 24th two PIPING PLOVERS were reported at the west end of Lake Byllesby in Dakota County. They were seen from the cemetery on the north side of the lake but could not be relocated later in the day. Interestingly, a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER was reported from this same location the following day. On the 23rd several AMERICAN AVOCETS and a CATTLE EGRET were also seen at the lake, but these birds as well have apparently moved on. Another Cattle Egret was reported from Rice County near Lower Sakatah Lake. It was found west of the intersection of county road 99 and Kent Ave.
In Kittson County an unprecedented fifty-one SHORT-EARED OWLS were counted on April 23rd by Glenn Browne. All of these birds were in the fields near the Joe River northwest of the town of Orleans.
At Wood Lake in Minneapolis I have reports of COMMON TERN, FORSTER'S TERN, HOUSE WREN, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, OVENBIRD, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.
Other migrants reported recently include BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, GREEN HERON, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, SORA, CHIMNEY SWIFT, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, BROWN THRASHER, EASTERN TOWHEE, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
There simply isn't room here to thank all the callers who took the time to call in their observations, but all reports are greatly appreciated.
The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday May 3rd.
