This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday March 8th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On March 1st, Karl Bardon reported an immature female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on the Otter Tail River in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, which was associating with about 270 Common Goldeneyes. A male Barrow's Goldeneye is still being reported in Duluth on Lake Superior near the lift bridge.
On March 2nd, Tom Tustison found a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE at Acacia Cemetery in Eagan, Dakota County, and the bird has been present every day since then. It was seen on top of the office building near the main entrance and around the shrubbery along the base of the office building. Look also on top of the portable outbuilding on the north side of the office. Another Solitaire was discovered at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum along state highway 5 near Chanhassen. It was found along the open three mile walking path on March 2nd and was still present on the 5th.
On the 4th, a LONG-TAILED DUCK was still at the Hastings dam of the Mississippi River in Dakota County.
On the 7th John Richardson reported a SNOWY OWL at mile marker 61 of U.S. Highway 169 just north of Hill City, Aitkin County.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL is still being seen at Tamarac NWR, and was seen as recently as March 5th. It can be found near the junction of Becker County Road 126 and West Height of Land Drive on the west side of Height of Land Lake. There are as many as twenty additional Northern Hawk Owl reports from the counties of Lake, St. Louis, Koochiching, Beltrami, Cass, and Lake of the Woods. Please call me if you would like directions.
A BOREAL OWL was found March 4th in Lake County. It was at the junction of Scenic Highway 61 and Larsmont Road. Other Boreals have been turning up in the Duluth area recently. For more information on those records, call the Duluth birding report at 218-525-5952.
A PRAIRIE FALCON was reported from the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport on the 6th, but no specific location was given.
On the 7th a GOLDEN EAGLE was seen on the Mississippi River just below Pigs Eye. This area is reached from Hardman Avenue just north of I-494 by going over the pedestrian bridge to the path and then walking north. Another Golden Eagle was seen on the same day near the junction of state highway 74 and Winona County road 26.
The SPOTTED TOWHEES and EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE are still being seen in Russell in Lyon County. They have been visiting a home at the north end of Russell along Lyon County road 15 where it crosses the Redwood River.
A few spring migrants are beginning to appear mostly in southern Minnesota. These include BALD EAGLE, PEREGRINE FALCON, MOURNING DOVE, HORNED LARK, and SNOW BUNTING. I also have several recent reports of NORTHERN SHRIKES from the Twin Cities area.
