This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday May 24th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On May 24th, Doug Johnson found a WHITE-EYED VIREO at Buffalo River State Park in Clay County. It was seen from the south end of the picnic area parking lot near the start of the paved trail which leads to the Prairie Smoke Trail. The bird foraged and frequently sang from the tops of the bushes along the edge of the picnic area.

On May 22nd, Karl Bardon found three CALIFORNIA GULLS at the Breckenridge sewage ponds in Wilkin County. The gulls were loafing in the small ponds on the west side of the sewage-pond complex.

On May 21st, several birders found a TRICOLORED HERON in Lake County. It was in a small wetland about 25 yards southwest of the Flood Bay Wayside Rest, which is about a mile northeast of Two Harbors up highway 61. The wetland is on the Lake Superior side of the highway. It was in view for about 45 minutes in mid-afternoon, but eventually took off and flew out of sight to the southwest and it has not been relocated.

Sara and Bill Haugen reported a male LAZULI BUNTING at their home in Farwell in northwestern Pope County. On May 22nd they watched it perch briefly on the pole holding their two bird feeders.

I have a second-hand report of a RED PHALAROPE from Meeker County on the 20th. It was found south of Grove City but I have no further information other than a later report that the bird is no longer present.

A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was in the town of Jasper on the Rock/Pipestone County line on May 19th. It was found in the trees on the southwest corner of the city park, which is on the south side of Pipestone County road 1 two blocks east of State Highway 23. And from Renville, Renville County, apparently three EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES have been visiting the feeders owned by Jack Sandberg. They have also been seen at several other locations within a few blocks of his residence. The location is along the 200 block of southwest 2nd street.

On May 19th, Phil Chu found an unidentified JAEGER in Duluth on the lake side of Park Point northeast of the Sky Harbor airport. The bird was never closer than about a mile from shore and spent most of its time sitting on the water.

On May 22nd, there were 21 species of shorebirds west of the town of Aitkin along Aitkin County road 15, also known as Cedarbrook Road. Birds seen here include RED KNOT, MARBLED GODWIT, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, RUDDY TURNSTONE, DUNLIN, and WILSON'S PHALAROPE.

On the 18th a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found in Crow Wing County. It was seen briefly about ten miles south of Brainerd on state highway 25 just past county road 143. Another Mockingbird was seen on the 14th near the corner of 80th St. and Bush Lake Road at the Highland Lake Park Preserve in Bloomington, Hennepin County.

Thanks to Marta Maddy, Maria and Steve Duane, Randy Frederickson, and Warren Nelson.
