This is the Minnesota Birding report for Thursday August 2nd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On Sunday July 29th, 854 shorebirds were counted at a wetland near Coon Creek Wildlife Management Area in Lyon County. This is five and three-quarter miles west and two miles north of Russell. Some of the 13 species observed included SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, and WILSON'S PHALAROPE. WILLETS were reported from here on the 28th.
Also on the 29th, Dedrick Benz reported many of the same species of shorebirds from the Lewiston sewage ponds in Winona County, plus AMERICAN AVOCET.
An AMERICAN BITTERN was found in Minneapolis in a wetland along state highway 280 on July 29th.
On August 1st, a family of five COMMON MOORHENS was observed by Dan Floren from the boat landing at Minnesota Lake. This is about two and a half miles south of the town of Litchfield in Meeker County.
