This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 28th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Two YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS are still being seen at Acacia Park Cemetery in Mendota Heights, Dakota County. The cemetery is northeast of Gun Club Lake just off state highway 13. Check especially near the flagpole bench. Because the birds are nesting, birders are asked to refrain from using tapes.
The EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in Caledonia, Houston County, is apparently still very easy to find. Check the small city park on the corner of East Lincoln and North Marshall Streets. Look especially near the gazebo or the playground. Two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES are still in the town of Jasper on the Rock/Pipestone county border as they have been for several months. On the 24th both were seen at the southwest corner of the park in the center of town.
A MUTE SWAN can be found at a small pond at the juncture of Grange and Hadley in Cottage Grove, Washington County. From St. Paul take U.S. highway 61 south to Grange Street, also called 80th Street, and turn right. Hadley is the first left.
Interesting was the belated report of a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL reported by Ellen Keylander from near Lake Minnetonka in Hennepin County. It was seen hunting the neighborhoods around the lake in early June.
A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was at Shepherd's Marsh in La Crescent, Houston County, on the 21st. From town drive behind the Subway restaurant, over the railroad tracks and finally behind the brush dump. Walk the path along the power poles to the end and check the banks of the nearby creek.
Two Black-backed Woodpeckers were seen along forest service road 315 in Cook County on June 20th. They were at the extreme southern end of a burn and just north of the Brule River.
In St. Louis County, a SHORT-EARED OWL was hunting along highway 16 east of Hibbing on June 21st. This is about two and a half miles east of highway 5.
LEAST BITTERNS are being heard at Sunset Park in Burnsville, Dakota County. The main entry is along Burnsville Parkway one block north of County Road 42. Watch and listen at the southwest end of the park's pond.
And finally, BLUE GROSBEAKS are easy to find at the visitor's center of Blue Mounds State Park in Rock County.
