This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November 14th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On the 8th an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was present on the mud flat just east of the Black Dog power plant in Dakota County. Bill George reported a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at LaFayette Bay on Lake Minnetonka, Hennepin County on the 12th. These may be sightings of the same individual, and may also be the Lesser Black-backed that has been frequenting Lake Harriet in Minneapolis for the past several weeks.
A ROSS'S GOOSE was found on the 14th at a small pond in Rochester, Olmsted County. To reach the pond take U.S. Highway 14 east to Olmsted County Road 22. Drive north for about a quarter of a mile to the entrance of the University Center. Go another few yards north and the pond will be on the east side of the road.
Another ROSS'S GOOSE was found on Otter Lake in McLeod County on the 9th. Otter Lake is just west of Hutchinson on the south side of state highway 7. Here there were also many CANADA GEESE, SNOW GEESE and GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and most of these were at the western edge of the lake. There is also a ROSS'S GOOSE on East Side Lake in Austin, Mower County which was reported by Dick Smaby on the 14th.
In Hennepin County, Bruce Baer reported four LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 14th on the pond that is along the Hogback Ridge Trail just east of the new Cedar Avenue bridge in Bloomington.
Barb Kull reports that 250 SANDHILL CRANES were in Pine County along state highway 70 in just west of the St. Croix River on the 11th.
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen by Chris Benson in the Whitewater Wildlife Management Area in Winona County the 9th. It was found about 100 yards east of the road near the Whitewater River along state highway 74 at mile post 50. A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was in this area on the 10th. Jim Lind reported a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Two Harbors, Lake County. This bird was between 3rd Ave. and 3rd St. on November 8th.
