This is the Minnesota Birding report for Thursday September 28th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union. This tape is being updated a few hours early to report on the second state record NORTHERN WHEATEAR. This bird, found by Jay Hammernick, was at the 40th Avenue mudflats in Duluth, St. Louis County. Jay first found this bird at about 11 A.M. on Wednesday, September 27th and it was still present at dusk that evening. Look for this bird directly on top of the levee especially where it runs along the east side of the main pond. For continued updates on this most interesting find, you can call the Duluth bird report at (218) 525-5952.

Elsewhere, that PACIFIC LOON first found on September 21st north of Duluth, was still present at least as recently as the 23rd and possibly later. Look at the location known as Stony Point along Lake Superior's north shore about 18 miles northeast of Duluth.

A ROSS' GOOSE was found on Lake of the Woods on September 14th by Mark Johnson. This bird may or may not have actually been in Minnesota being seen very close to the Canadian border but it may still be worth a look though it is not known if the bird is still in the area.

Shorebirds seen around the state include BLACK-BELLIED, SEMIPALMATED and AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, KILLDEER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY, BAIRD'S, PECTORAL and SPOTTED SANDPIPER, a juvenile RED KNOT seen in Roseau County, SANDERLING, DUNLIN and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER.

Finally, several SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS have been seen at Carlos Avery Wildlife Refuge over the past several days. The birds have been seen in the cattails about a quarter of a mile north of pool number 4.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, October 5th. If you have birds to report, please leave your name, phone number and a brief but specific message.
