This is the Minnesota birding report for Wednesday June 19th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Though birding and bird reports have both slowed considerably over the past week, there are still some things of interest worth mentioning.

Two HARLEQUIN DUCKS were found by Mary Ann Rudelt on Lake Superior near the town of Tofte on June 9th. On the 11th a single bird was still being seen in the area. There are only a handful of summer records of Harlequin Duck, making the sighting of a pair of them all the more interesting.

A FERRUGINOUS HAWK was at the Felton Prairie in Clay County on June 15th. Kim Risen found the bird at the northern edge of the prairie as it hunted over the open fields. Look along the east/west dirt roads that run on either side of county road 34. Up to ten GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS were seen nearby along the dirt road that runs north from county road 26, one and a quarter miles west of county road 27.

A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was heard at the Louisville Swamp in Scott County on June 13th by Kathy Graham. The bird was calling in the early morning hours near the Mezinoni Trail.

This has been an interesting year for southerly RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS. One was seen by Deanne Endrizzi at the Bass Ponds in Hennepin County on June 13th, and another was found on Energy Park Drive in St. Paul, two blocks west of Snelling Ave by Denny Mayer on June 16.

As recently as Saturday June 15th the KENTUCKY WARBLER was still being found along trail number 2 at Seven Mile Creek Park in Nicollet County. BLUE-WINGED and CERULEAN WARBLERS were also seen in good numbers there, and the YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was still at Sibley State Park in Kandiyohi County as late as June 16th. Also on June 16th Don Wansura found a pair of LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES in Pine County, Both birds were at the public water access to the Kettle River, about five miles east of Hinckley along state highway 48. There are nesting records for Louisiana Waterthrush in this area of Pine County, but this is certainly at the very northern edge of their normal range in Minnesota. And those PRAIRIE WARBLERS continue to be seen along East Bethel Blvd in northern Anoka County.

A HENSLOW'S SPARROW was discovered by Tom Tustison in Chisago County on June 15th. The bird was in a hay field one mile west of county road 8 along county road 63. This field is marked "No Trespassing" and birders are asked to please stay on the road. Another two HENSLOW'S SPARROWS were found at the Felton Prairie in Clay County June 16th.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday July 4th. If you have birds to report, please leave your name, location, phone number and a specific message.
