This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday July 25th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
It now appears that the PACIFIC LOON which had been seen on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis since the 2nd of July has left the area. It was last reported on July 22nd by Chuck Mayer.
A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was reported by several people on July 19th, at a small wetland east of the intersection of Otter Lake Road and Ramsey County Road H2, in the town of White Bear.
Unusual is the GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE seen on Brown Lake at the Minnesota Valley State Park on July 17th. This is near the town of Jordan in Scott County. The goose was in with 20 CANADA GEESE. This is only the 2nd summer record of this species that I am aware of.
Peder Svingen visited Roseau County on July 20th, and northwest of Roseau and east of the Roseau River WMA he found approximately 20 YELLOW RAILS. NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were also heard at various locations in this part of the county.
Doug Johnson reports that the Twin Valley sewage ponds in Norman County had the following shorebirds on July 13th: WILSON'S PHALAROPE, PECTORAL, LEAST, SEMIPALMATED and SOLITARY SANDPIPER, and GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS. Shorebirds reported from western Minnesota include SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and BAIRD'S SANDPIPER at Thielke Lake in Big Stone County, and a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER was at Lac qui Parle Lake on the 20th.
Other bird reports include a BONAPARTE'S GULL seen on Lake Harriet on July 20th by Dave Cahlander, a TURKEY VULTURE in Hastings also on the 20th, a PEREGRINE FALCON feeding on birds in a yard in Burnsville, two LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES in Dakota County along 180th street between Emery and Fisher Avenues, and BOBOLINKS were migrating near Lonsdale in Rice County on the 19th.
Bob Janssen birded the Louisville Swamp in Scott County on July 19th and found a Prothonotary Warbler nest near the Sand Creek. He also found good numbers of AMERICAN WOODCOCK, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, RED-EYED VIREO and AMERICAN REDSTART.
And finally, Wally Swanson reports that RED CROSSBILLS have been seen at local feeders in Janesville in Waseca County.
