On Feb 5th Jay Hamernick found four TRUMPETER SWANS on the Mississippi River in Sherburne County. This was just north of the town of Elk River.
Two GREAT GRAY OWLS can still be seen at Lake Elmo County Park in Washington County. At least one of the birds has been reported there as recently as the 12th. In Rice County a GREAT GRAY OWL can still be seen in Riverbend Nature Center. The bird has been found along Deer Trail. At least four GREAT GRAYS can be found near the town of Afton in Washington County. Look along 42nd street south between Trading Post Trail and Paradox Way. And still another GREAT GRAY is still being reported by many people on state highway 95 about two miles south of the town of Marine on St. Croix in Washington County. On Tuesday the 11th Frank Farnham called to report that a GREAT GRAY OWL can be found west of the junction of France Ave and Overlook Drive in Bloomington, Hennepin County. The bird is at the end of Palmer Road, which goes south off of Overlook about a half mile west of France Ave. What may have been the same bird was seen on the 9th at Nine Mile Creek south of 106th Street. Several people called to report the GREAT GRAY at Pine Point Park in Stillwater Township off County Road 55.
Ken LaFond found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Kanabec County on the morning of Feb 12th. This was at the junction of County Road 20 and 310th street. Ken also reports that the HAWK OWL in Blaine at 99th St. and Cloverleaf was seen again on Feb 13th. Vada Rudolph has been seeing a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL near her yard in Anoka County, and an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL was seen by Ron Selbitschka on Feb 9th in St. Paul and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen here on the 13th. Another SCREECH-OWL was reported from Oval Park along 47th Ave south and 35th street in Minneapolis.
The BOREAL OWL is still being seen at Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley, Anoka County as it has been since January 16th. The owl can quite often be seen from inside the visitor's center near the feeders.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK has been seen for several days along U.S. highway 12 in the town of Wayzata in Hennepin County. Bob Jesen found a RED- SHOULDERED HAWK at the Whitewater Wildlife Management Area in Winona County on the 9th. On the same day GOLDEN EAGLE was seen here by Dave Zumeta.
Across the southeastern part of the state HORNED LARKS, SNOW BUNTINGS and a few LAPLAND LONGSPURS are moving northward and large mixed flocks have been reported from several counties.
And just to report again on a few sightings of some interesting birds that are still around, the BARROW'S GOLDENEYE is still at the Blue Lake settling ponds in Scott County, where it has been for more than two months. The MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD near the town of Jordan in Scott County was seen again on February 9th. The bird was in the vicinity of Mendoza Ave and Circle Dr. This area is reached by driving north on county road 9 from U.S. 169 in the town of Jordan. Turn right onto Valley View Drive and go about a mile to Circle Drive. Turn left here and drive to Mendoza Ave. The Bluebird has been seen in this general area but some exploration may be necessary as it does tend to move around quite a bit. And that SPOTTED TOWHEE is still being seen at the Assisi Heights Convent along 14th street in Rochester, Olmsted County.
