This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday November 27th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Interesting are the reports of several species of raptors from south Minneapolis near the railroad tracks and grain elevators found between Hiawatha and Dight Avenues, and between 36th and 42nd streets south. GYRFALCON, PRAIRIE FALCON, MERLIN, AMERICAN KESTREL and COOPER'S HAWK have all been reported in the last few days. The first report of a GYRFALCON in this area was from John Futcher and Al Bolduc on November 23rd. Ray Glassel then refound it in the same general area on the 24th, and it was seen again on the 26th. Also on the 26th -- and continuing up to today -- a PRAIRIE FALCON has been seen in this same location. This bird has been reported by Bob Janssen, Steve Roman and Ray Glassel, among many others. To my knowledge, thus far only Ray Glassel has seen both birds. I have no specific locations or dates for the other raptors.
Elsewhere, a late lingering WESTERN GREBE was seen on the 23rd by Dave Campbell on the St. Croix River near the Carpenter Nature Center in Washington County. And that BARROW'S GOLDENEYE is still at the Blue Lake treatment plant in Scott County where it has been since at least the 13th. An apparent TUNDRA SWAN is also at the plant.
Among the many CANADA GEESE at Silver Lake in Rochester, Olmsted County was a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, seen by Chris Benson on November 21st.
On November 20th the following species were reported in the Grand Marais harbor in Cook County: two first year GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, one immature ICELAND GULL, several THAYER'S GULL, one GLAUCOUS GULL, plus a few WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and OLDSQUAW.
Upwards of 26 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were reported by Bill Stauffer on the west side of Gun Lake in Aitkin County. Go north from state highway 210 along County Road 78 to township road 373 and check near its intersection with Woodtick Lane.
SNOWY OWLS have begun to show up and I have three recent reports. David McRoberts found a SNOWY OWL just north of Renville Township in Stevens County on November 22nd. A SNOWY OWL was reported from near Speak the Word Church in Golden Valley, Hennepin County on November 21st. And on the 26th, a Snowy was found two miles east of the town of Fischer in Polk County.
Betsy Beneke found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on November 24th in Detroit Lakes, Becker County. Look on the 1000 block of West Lake Drive.
The ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK which has been coming to Don Feeney's feeder in the town of West St. Paul in Dakota County for the past two weeks was still present as of November 23rd. EVENING GROSBEAK reports continue to come in, and recent observations have been reported from Becker, Dakota, and Pine counties. Both PINE SISKINS and COMMON REDPOLLS have also been widely reported. A HOARY REDPOLL was seen by Benjamin Thiem at the visitor's center of Agassiz NWR in Marshall County on the 25th. And BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS have been found in the counties of Aitkin, Cook, and Beltrami.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to call in their observations.
