Hotline: Minnesota Statewide
This is the Minnesota statewide birding report for Thursday May 14th
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On May 9th Bruce Fall found a TRICOLORED HERON at the Louisville Swamp
area of the Minnesota River in Scott County. Though the bird was seen to
fly off, it may still be worth looking for. Check along the shore of the
swamp about 1/2 mile down the Mazomani Trail. The short drive to the main
parking lot is about 2 miles south of state highway 41 along U.S. 169.
Very unusual is the WHITE-WINGED DOVE reported from Winona County. This
was along U.S. highway 61 near the town of Dakota. The bird was seen
feeding along the roadside on May 9th, but could not be relocated later
that day.
Kim Eckert found a CLARK'S GREBE on Boone Lake in Meeker County on the
8th, but the bird could not be relocated when he looked again on the 10th.
A CATTLE EGRET was found by Ken Lafond on May 13th in Anoka County, near
the junction of Birch Street and Sherman Lake Road in the town of Lino
Lakes.
A FERRUGINOUS HAWK was seen in Traverse County on the 10th, but no
specific location was given.
In Duluth on the 10th, one WILLET, three SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, and four
DUNLIN were present on the back side of Hearding Island along Park Point.
30 COMMON TERNS and three CASPIAN TERNS were also present.
Interesting is the report of two SABINE'S GULL, and adult and an
immature, seen by Shaun Strohmer near Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis on
Friday, May 8. No word on if these birds have been seen since the initial
observation.
I have a second hand report of a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD seen at the
Minneapolis/St. Paul airport on May 11th. The bird was seen briefly just
south of 66th Street in Richfield near the ball fields.
A HOODED WARBLER was found by Bill Stauffer along Langford Circle, which
intersects Sunset Lake Road in Murphy Hanrehan Park in Scott County. The
bird was seen several times during the day of May 13th, and since HOODED
WARBLERS are known to nest in the park it is likely the bird will remain
in the area. HOODED WARBLERS were also reported from within the park on
May 10th by Paul Kempler between trail markers 14 and 15.
Bill Stjern reported a WORM-EATING WARBLER at the old Frontenac cemetery
in Goodhue County on both May 9th and 10th. Near here, Dave Neitzel found
a singing WESTERN TANAGER in Frontenac State Park on the 9th. The bird was
found near the end of Sand Point, which is at the southeastern edge of the
park.
A HENSLOW'S SPARROW was reported by Diane Anderson on May 10th, at the
western end of Chester Woods County Park in Olmsted County. To get to this
location, take U.S. Highway 14 east from Rochester. At the Conoco station
in the town of Chester, go south. Turn east on Olmsted County Road 131
and continue to the end of the road. This will be Chester Woods County
Park. Follow the fence line eastward until you come to the DNR Black
Walnut plantings on the south. The bird was seen and heard in the field on
the left. And Bob Janssen found a HENSLOW'S SPARROW at Afton State Park in
Washington County. He found the bird on May 13th about a mile from the
park entrance just past the sign for Group Camps. A third HENSLOW'S was
reported from Frontenac State Park in Goodhue County on the 9th, though no
specific location was given.
Other migrants that have now been reported from various parts of the state
include WILSON'S PHALAROPE, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO,
CAPE MAY WARBLER, SCARLET TANAGER, BOBOLINK, INDIGO BUNTING, and ORCHARD
ORIOLE.
The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday May 21st.
