This is the Minnesota statewide birding report for Thursday May 28th
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
That BEWICK'S WREN found in Sherburne County by Jay Hamernick on May 20th,
is still being found at the Camp in the Woods campground. From U.S.
highway 169 go west on Sherburne County Road 9 for about 2 1/4 miles. Go
south on 144th Street for 1/2 mile to 289th Ave. Take this road west to
the Camp in the Woods sign on the left. Check the pines in the campground
and along the road. YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS and LARK SPARROWS have also been
reported in this general area.
On the 26th Tom Nelson found an apparent adult PARASITIC JAEGER on Lake
Superior in Duluth. He watched the bird from the park found at about 60
Ave. east and London Road.
A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was reported by Steve Morrison, on the 24th.
The bird was perched on power lines along Carlton County Road 121 one mile
west of highway 73.
Terry Brashear reported a WILLET from Lake Harriet in Minneapolis on May
27; Craig Mandel reported two WILLETS among the many other shorebird
species he found at the Fairfax sewage ponds in Renville County; and Carol
Schumacher found a RUDDY TURNSTONE at the Lewiston sewage ponds in Winona
County on the 25th.
Oscar Johnson found singing ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS on May 27th along the
Oxbow Loop trail of Elm Creek Park in Brooklyn Park.
A BELL'S VIREO was found by Jullian Sellers on the 25th at the McCarthy
Lake WMA. The bird was found along Wabasha County Road 84 about one and a
half miles north of U.S. highway 61.
No one has recently reported that KENTUCKY WARBLER from the Louisville
Swamp area of the Minnesota River in Scott County, but one was reported
from Murphy Hanrehan Park, which is also in Scott County, on May 25th. The
location was described as being along the horse trail across the road from
the horse trailer parking lot. A HENSLOW'S SPARROW was also reported from
near this location, described as being about a half mile west of the horse
trailer parking lot. A second KENTUCKY WARBLER was seen at Nerstrand Woods
State Park in Rice County by Gene Bauer on the 28th. To reach the area,
park in the Primitive Group Camp. Walk down the trail leading to Oak
Bridge. After about two hundred yards there will be a fork in the trail.
Stay to the left and continue for another two hundred yards to second fork
in the trail. The warbler was heard singing from this fork. A HOODED
WARBLER was found by Barb Verville at Lebanon Hills Park in Dakota County
on May 25th. This was near Johnny Cake Ridge Road. Another HOODED WARBLER
was seen at French Regional Park in Minneapolis on the 25th just south of
the visitor center.
