This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday April 1st sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Terry Brashear and Steve Roman found a BLACK-HEADED GULL at Sprit Lake in Jackson County on March 26th. This was along Jackson County Road 2 at the Minnesota/Iowa border, 8 miles south and 5 1/2 miles west of the town of Jackson. They also reported that GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES have returned to the Grover's Lake area in Jackson County, just west of Spirit Lake.
Jay Hamernick found COMMON LOONS on Lake Vadnais in Ramsey County on the 28th. Several HORNED GREBES were also present there. Two very early RED-NECKED GREBES were seen on Silver Lake in Sibley County on the 27th. This is one of the earliest dates on record for this species. Another RED-NECKED GREBE was seen on the 28th at the Bass Ponds area of southeastern Hennepin County by Perry Daniels.
Several DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were reported from Prior Lake, Scott County near Mystic Lake on March 30th. And Dave Thurston found a few AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS at Carlos Avery Refuge in Anoka County on April 1st.
A MUTE SWAN is being seen at Gray's Bay on Lake Minnetonka in western Hennepin County. It has been seen as recently as March 26th. TRUMPETER SWANS were seen by Erika Sitz on March 31st as they passed over the town of Ramsey in Anoka County.
Craig Mandel called to report a ROSS'S GOOSE on the 25th in a flooded field at the junction of Sibley County Roads 9 and 15. Another ROSS'S GOOSE was seen March 31st in Ramsey County on a pond at the north end of the 3M plant in Maplewood. From I-94 take the McKnight Road exit. Go north about half a mile, then turn left onto Fifth St.
On March 28th Dedrick Benz reported an OLDSQUAW at Prairie Island in Winona County. This was along the Mississippi River near the Two Pines Plantation, and the bird was reported again on April 1st. An early FIELD SPARROW was also reported from this area.
The first LESSER YELLOWLEGS of the year were reported on April 1st by John Kroll when he saw three at the Bowerville sewage ponds in central Todd County.
On March 31st a CAROLINA WREN visited the yard of Mary Hunt in St. Paul in Ramsey County.
Among the many additional reports of common spring migrants are most every species of duck, PIED-BILLED GREBE, GREAT EGRET, TUNDRA SWAN, TURKEY VULTURE, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, TREE SWALLOW, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, FOX SPARROW, and SONG SPARROW.
