This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday February 11th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Betsy Beneke reported a SNOWY OWL on February 4th along U.S. Highway 59 at its junction with Becker County Road 26. This is several miles north of the town of Detroit Lakes. Another Becker County SNOWY OWL was seen on Tamarac Lake at Tamarac NWR on the 5th. And two SNOWY OWLS are being seen in the Duluth harbor in St. Louis County.
Very unusual was the TURKEY VULTURE reported on February 7th. This record early migrant was reported from Amherst Township in Fillmore County.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen by Allen Kuntz at Carver Park in Carver County on the 6th.
Steve Weston found a PRAIRIE FALCON on February 6th atop a grain elevator in south Minneapolis. The location was 38th Street and Hiawatha Ave. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at Black Dog Lake in Dakota County on the 7th. In St. Paul in Ramset County two PEREGRINE FALCONS were reported on the 5th, One was seen along Interstate 94 near Rice Street and the other in the Midway area along University Ave. at its junction with Prior Ave.
In Rochester, Olmsted County, a CAROLINA WREN was at Leslie Kottke's feeder on February 10th, along with a TUFTED TITMOUSE. Please call Leslie before visiting.
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were reported from Red Lake County on the 9th by Shelley Steva and in the town of Hinkley in Pine County on the 10th by Ken LaFond.
Ron Dexter has up to five WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS over-wintering at his feeder in St. Paul, and Barbara Muldenhauer found two White-throats at Browndale Park in the town of St. Louis Park, Hennepin County on the 7th. These birds appear to have been present at least since January 17th.
Other reports include several HOODED MERGANSERS, RING-NECKED DUCK, BALD EAGLE, many NORTHERN SHRIKES, HORNED LARK, and several flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS in Becker, Pennington, and Carver counties
