This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday May 27th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The SWALLOW-TAILED KITE reported on last week's update of this tape is still being seen in Rice County at Lower Sakatah Lake. To reach this location, go west of the town of Faribault on state highway 60. Turn north on to county road 99, and drive about three miles to the bridge. Park here and watch the trees to the northeast. The bird is also being seen along 240th street, which is accessed by continuing along county road 99 and turning right onto LeSueur, then turning right again on 240th.

I have a most unusual report of a BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW at Afton State Park in Washington County from the 22nd of May. The bird was reportedly seen in the northwestern part of the park though no additional information was given.

On Saturday May 15 several birders reported seeing a MISSISSIPPI KITE near the Minnesota River in the vicinity of the Black Dog Lake power plant in Dakota County. While the observers were unsure of the identification, this is the same day that another Mississippi Kite was reported from St. Paul.

At least three SNOWY EGRETS have been seen this past week in Kandiyohi County. One bird was seen at the intersection of county roads 25 and 41. Two were found near where Shakopee Creek exits Swan Lake at County Road 27. And what may have been a fourth bird was seen at the New London Fish Hatchery. Thanks to Randy Frederickson for these reports.

Bob Holtz found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD in Isanti County on the 25th, less than a mile west of state highway 47 along Isanti County Road 11.

In Rochester, Olmsted County, a CAROLINA WREN was seen again at Leslie Kottke's feeder on May 26th. Please call Leslie before visiting. Another lingering Carolina Wren was reported from St. Paul where a bird has been present for several months in the Battlecreek neighborhood, especially along Mystic Street.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday June 3rd.
