This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday November 25th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The brief flurry of exceptional sightings from Grand Marais in Cook County over the weekend subsided as quickly as it began and many of the birds reported from there have apparently now left area. These included an ANCIENT MURRELET, found by Philip Chu, Dedrick Benz, John Hockema, and Rick Hoyme on the 20th on the lake outside the main harbor; a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE seen in the same general location by Howard Towle on the 21st; a PARASITIC JAEGER seen by many observers farther out over the lake on the same day; and a KING EIDER seen on the 22nd by Ken and Molly Hoffman in the harbor itself. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found on the 21st just north of Grand Marais at the Hovland boat launch. Good birds found over the weekend and still in the Grand Marais area include HARLEQUIN DUCK, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, SNOWY OWL, ICELAND GULL, and GLAUCOUS GULL.
An immature POMARINE JAEGER was found on the 22nd by Peder Svingen and Anthony Hertzel along the western shore of Mille Lacs Lake. The location was near the small town of Vineland at the junction of Mille Lacs County Road 35 and U.S. Highway 169.
That second-winter CALIFORNIA GULL was relocated November 21st near the swimming beach on the north end of Lake Calhoun in Minneapols. It was only a few yards off shore in the company of hundreds of RING-BILLED GULLS. A PACIFIC LOON has also been reported from the western shore of the same lake.
Dan Floren found a GOLDEN EAGLE on the 19th of November in section 17 of Dassel Township in Meeker County, and he found another in southern Stearns County just west of Powder Ridge on the 21st. He also reports that a BROWN THRASHER was at Stahl's Lake County Park in Mcleod County on the 19th.
A VARIED THRUSH was reported on the 20th by Steve and Jo Blanich from Crow Wing County. The bird is at a feeder in section 6 of the small town of Trommald.
Tom Boevers found a RED-THROATED LOON on French Lake in Rice County on the 17th. Check near the public access where a pair of SURF SCOTERS have also occasionally been seen.
