We're making more progress with early spring migration. Horned larks are showing up in greater numbers as far north as Roseau and Kittson Counties. Trumpeter swans continue to arrive at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge and a few other sites in Becker County, along with a few Canada geese. And the first AMERICAN KESTREL of the season was seen north of Detroit Lakes on the 8th.

Glenn and Eloise Browne found a SNOWY OWL in Kittson County along Hwy. 75 near the town of Humbold on the 7th.

A LONG-EARED OWL was reported by Cheri Sullivan near Lancaster in Kittson Co. on the 5th.

Jeanie Joppru and Shelley Steva took a trip on the 3rd and found HORNED LARK and a SHORT-EARED OWL in Pennington County. In Beltrami County, they found HORNED LARK, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, BARRED OWL, SHORT-EARED OWL, and GREAT GRAY OWLS.

Karl Bardon took his annual winter trip through northwestern Minnesota last weekend and found 16 NORTHERN HAWK OWLS and 2 GREAT GRAY OWLS in a variety of locations in Lake of the Woods, Koochiching and Beltrami Counties. He mentioned that side roads both east and west of Hwy. 72 in Red Lake County might be particularly fruitful during the last few hours of daylight.

At the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge this week, birds reported include TRUMPETER SWAN, BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN HAWK OWL, SNOW BUNTING, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, PINE GROSBEAKS, EVENING GROSBEAKS, PINE SISKIN and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.

In Otter Tail County, Steve Millard reported RED-TAILED HAWKS, which he suspects over-wintered. On the river in Fergus Falls, Karl Bardon found an immature female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE among about 270 COMMON GOLDENEYES on March 1st.

Thanks also to Hal Halvorson and Mary Wyatt for reports.
