Following a weekend of cold temperatures and up to 10 inches of heavy, wet, snow in some areas of the northwest, warmer temperatures and sunshine made their way into the region and by mid week we were enjoying temperatures in the 60's. Windy conditions helped to open most area lakes, although some of the deeper, colder lakes are still partially covered with ice.
Maggie Anderson and Gary Tischer report that a very late SNOWY OWL was still present this past week at the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall Co. It seems to move between the wildlife drive near refuge headquarters and the west boundary of the refuge near Northwest Pool. Also lingering at Agassiz on the 22nd were 20-25 SNOW BUNTINGS and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK.
An amazing 51 SHORT-EARED OWLS were reported by Glenn Browne on the 23rd near the Joe River pond northwest of the town of Orleans in Kittson Co. Short-eareds were also reported from Agassiz NWR in Marshall Co., along Pennington CR 20 northeast of Thief River Falls and from the Rothsay WMA in Wilkin Co.
A GREAT GRAY OWL has been reported around Norris Camp in the Red Lake WMA, Lake of the Woods Co.
Several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were still present at Agassiz NWR on the 26th.
New arrivals at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge this week included CASPIAN TERN, FORSTER'S TERNS, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, AMERICAN BITTERN, MARSH WREN and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.
COMMON LOONS have found their way as far north as Pennington Co. RED-NECKED GREBES and HORNED GREBES have been reported from Marshall, Polk, Becker, Otter Tail and Wilkin Counties. WESTERN GREBES were reported in Otter Tail and Wilkin Counties.
Mary & Bill Wyatt, south of Detroit Lakes in Becker County, hosted a SPOTTED TOWHEE as well as what appeared to be an Eastern/Spotted hybrid for several days this week.
Other birds reported in northwestern Minnesota this past week include RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, TUNDRA SWAN, OSPREY, FRANKLIN'S GULL, BONAPARTE'S GULL, MERLIN, MARBLED GODWIT, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, HERMIT THRUSH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
