Migration continues, despite the fact that there is still snow left in the woods and many northwestern Minnesota lakes are still covered with more than 30+ inches of ice.

GREAT GRAY OWLS can still be found near Roseau, in the Beltrami Island State Forest and Red Lake Wildlife Management Area which are in Roseau, Lake of the Woods and Beltrami Counties. A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen by Hudak's Resort near Waskish in Beltrami Co. on March 31st. On April 2nd a SNOWY OWL was seen four miles east of Thief River Falls in Pennington Co.

A pair of MERLINS has been seen over the past week in the city of Thief River Falls, Pennington County.

SNOW BUNTINGS, PINE GROSBEAKS, and EVENING GROSBEAKS were still present in Lake of the Woods County on the 3rd. Note: Although fairly common throughout the winter, pine grosbeaks were reported to have left most feeders during the middle week of March.

An immature GLAUCOUS GULL was on the north end of Lake Traverse, Traverse Co. on the 3rd.

At the Rothsay WMA in Wilkin Co. on the 5th, birds reported were an early MARBLED GODWIT, an immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK, nine SHORT-EARED OWLS and GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN.

RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were reported over the last week from Becker and Mahnomen Counties. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were reported from Becker, Polk, Pennington, Marshall and Kittson Counties this week. And RED-TAILED HAWK and NORTHERN HARRIER have been reported from all counties in the northwest also.

SANDHILL CRANES were first reported on March 30th from Polk County, with many more sightings reported in the days following in all counties as far north as Kittson.

A NORTHERN CARDINAL visited a feeder in Lancaster, Kittson County on the 4th. COMMON REDPOLLS were also present there the same day.

EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were reported from three different places in Becker County on the 5th and 6th.

AMERICAN ROBINS continue to migrate through NW Minnesota and were seen by the hundreds in and around Detroit Lakes on the 5th.

GREAT BLUE HERONS have been reported throughout northwestern counties since March 30th, with large numbers of birds seeming to arrive on April 3-4-5.

At the Hamden Slough NWR in Becker Co. on the 4th, six TUNDRA SWANS were present, along with MALLARD, RING-NECKED DUCK and six TREE SWALLOWS.

Other birds reported this week include pied-billed grebe, common goldeneye, lesser scaup, ring-necked duck, bufflehead, common and hooded merganser, American woodcock, killdeer, great egret, American kestrel, belted kingfisher, common grackle, red-winged blackbirds, meadowlark, horned lark, Lapland longspur, dark-eyed junco, pine siskin, American goldfinch, purple finch and American tree sparrow. At Lake Bemidji in Beltrami Co. on the 3rd, a RUDDY DUCK was present and on the 4th - approximately 300 HERRING GULLS.
