Record warm temperatures and strong winds early in the week worked to rid area lakes of ice and waterfowl numbers rose quickly. Greater white-fronted geese, tundra swans and sandhill cranes continued to move through northwestern counties in good numbers.

Arrivals in Otter Tail County this week included COMMON SNIPE, BARN SWALLOW, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER.

In Becker County, birds appearing included COMMON LOON, CANVASBACK, REDHEAD, RUDDY DUCK, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON, MARBLED GODWIT, COMMON SNIPE, FRANKLIN'S GULL, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, LEAST FLYCATCHER, PURPLE MARTIN, TREE SWALLOW, PINE WARBLER, CHIPPING SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.

Three CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS were observed at the Felton Prairie in Clay County on the 16th. And in Wilkin County on the 14th, a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was observed at the Rothsay WMA just south of Lawndale.

In Polk County, birds reported included ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, MERLIN, GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, SHORT-EARED OWL, EASTERN PHOEBE, TREE SWALLOW, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, VESPER SPARROW, SONG SPARROW and SWAMP SPARROW.

Marshall County sightings included WOOD DUCK, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, FRANKLIN'S GULL, FORSTER'S TERN, MOURNING DOVE, TREE SWALLOW, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, EASTERN BLUEBIRD and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER.

In Kittson County over the past week, birds reported included DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, TUNDRA SWAN, WOOD DUCK, REDHEAD, HOODED MERGANSER, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, MERLIN, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, RING-BILLED GULL, HERRING GULL, WESTERN MEADOWLARK, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and COMMON REDPOLL.

And lastly, in the Northwest Angle and Lake of the Woods area, a pair of TRUMPETER SWANS were identified near Angle Inlet. Other birds reported were SANDHILL CRANE, KILLDEER, AMERICAN ROBIN, large numbers of DARK-EYED JUNCOS, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, COMMON REDPOLL and EVENING GROSBEAK.
