Migration continues in the northwest as the raptors stream south, and some waterfowl also heading that way. Leaves have nearly all blown off the trees in the strong fall winds that we have been having lately. At our feeder just east of Thief River Falls, there are many PURPLE FINCHES this week. Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks , Polk County, had four PINE SISKINS at her feeder on October 11. On the 16th, she observed large flocks of COMMON GRACKLES and the first of the season NORTHERN SHRIKE. Among the migrants were three DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, two BALD EAGLES, two RED-TAILED HAWKS, a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK , and a MERLIN. Visiting birder, Reynold Larsen, saw many TUNDRA SWANS and two SANDHILL CRANES at Hamden Slough NWR in Clay County on October 12. Benjamin Eckhoff reporting from Lake Carlos SP in Douglas County this week reported large rafts of AMERICAN COOTS, a PEREGRINE FALCON, BROWN CREEPER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, and PURPLE FINCH.
