This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November 7, 2013 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. Ever so slowly , we are slipping into winter, made more obvious by the time change we experienced last weekend. Migration is about over, and now the vagrants are starting to show up. The big news this week is the LEWIS'S WOODPECKER reported by Janet Anderson in Roosevelt on the Roseau- Lake of the Woods County line. Location is along CR 17 north of MN 11 which is the county line. To get to the location, turn north on CR 17, also known as Rocky Point Road, cross the tracks, and the bird has been visiting the first house on the left since November 2. The house is gray with a tan garage. CR 17 is very busy and has no shoulder so it is advisable to turn onto the gravel street and park on the shoulder there to view the feeders. Do not park in the driveway or very close to it as the feeder is very close to the road. The bird has been flying back and forth into Lake of the Woods county to the next house, the first on the right of CR 17. As of 2PM this afternoon the bird was still there. A PILEATED WOODPECKER attempted to drive it away while I was looking at it. In Polk County, Terry and Joanne Johnson reported a late PALM WARBLER in their yard in East Grand Forks on November 3. Charlene Nelson reported 16 TRUMPETER SWANS at Lake Christina in Douglas County on October 30. At home at Elbow Lake in Grant County, Charlene reported 5 HARRIS'S SPARROWS and a HOUSE FINCH on October 30. On November 2, two adult BALD EAGLES were seen on MN 79 near Elbow Lake. A GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET was observed on November 3 in Elbow Lake. Thanks to Janet Anderson, Joanne Johnson, and Charlene Nelson for their reports. Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@mncable.net OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, November 14, 2013.
