This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, September 6, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Although no unusual species have been reported in Duluth and vicinity lately, there has been a decent movement of a good variety of migrants.
Surprising numbers of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were sighted last weekend, with no fewer than 60 seen Sept 3 both at Two Harbors and from the Hawk Ridge Main Overlook; 32 pelicans were also seen at Hawk Ridge on the 1st.
Also at the Ridge, the migration of HAWKS has been picking up some this week, with a count of 605 on Sept 3 and 546 on the 4th; while most of these are Sharp-shinneds, there is a good variety of other species being seen, with 10 species recorded both days.
SHOREBIRDS made a good showing last weekend at the 40th Ave West Erie Pier area, with no fewer than 12 species there on Sept 2, including both BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was also seen Aug 31 in Two Harbors on the Burlington Bay beach.
And 3 surprisingly early AMERICAN PIPITS showed up Aug 31 at Bayside Park in Silver Bay in Lake Co.
