This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, December 27th, 2007 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A GREAT GRAY OWL was found by Greg Seegert on the 24th in the Sax-Zim Bog along the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 2.5 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). Greg also found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along the Admiral Road (CR 788), 0.1 mile south of the gravel pit.

On the 23rd along the Hedbom Forest Road in Aitkin County, Greg found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS 0.4 mile west of the St. Louis County line. He found another BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER 0.7 mile west of the county line. He found a flock of eight SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on the east side of Kestrel Avenue (CR 16), about 0.5 mile south of Tamarack, a flock of nine on the south side of 420th Street, 1.8 miles west of Kestrel Avenue (CR 16), and a flock of seven on the north side of CR 18, 2-3 miles east of US Highway 169.

Along Lake County Road 2 on the 25th, Greg found three BOREAL CHICKADEES 0.1 mile north of Greenwood Creek, and two along Forest Trail 834 at the southern tip of Greenwood Lake. He found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along CR 2, 0.4 mile south of Greenwood Creek, and two more 1.1 miles south of Greenwood Creek.

Karl Bardon found a SLATY-BACKED GULL at the Superior, WI landfill on the 21st, as well as eight GLAUCOUS GULLS, seven THAYER'S GULLS, and three ICELAND GULLS.

Sparky Stensaas found a SNOWY OWL on the 22nd in Duluth along Airport Road near Cirrus Design. Several birders have had encounters with security personnel in this area in the past, so discretion is strongly advised when looking for this bird.

The VARIED THRUSH at 226 Ridgewood Road in east Duluth was still being seen as of the 25th. Mike Hendrickson had a late-lingering SONG SPARROW on the 22nd in his yard in Smithville. One of the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES in Two Harbors was relocated on the 21st at 1st Street and 4th Avenue. A first-year GLAUCOUS GULL was seen on the 24th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors.
