This is the Duluth Birding Report for August 22nd, 2016 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The first migrant COMMON NIGHHAWKS of the season were reported in Duluth and along the North Shore on the 14th. Very early season high counts were recorded by the counters at Hawk Ridge and Lester River on the 14th (4,140 nighthawks), 15th (2,020), and 16th (4,705). Karl Bardon and Steve Kolbe then counted 12,763 COMMON NIGHHAWKS on the 19th. They also saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on the 21st.

A GREAT EGRET was found by Richard Hoeg on the 13th at 40th Avenue West in Duluth and continues to be seen there almost daily.

The BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER at the Park Point Recreation Area was reported as recently as the 15th. Julie Grahn saw a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and two YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS on the 21st at the Cook Wastewater Treatment Plant in northern St. Louis County. Clinton Nienhaus saw a WILSON'S PHALAROPE on the 20th at the Castle Danger Wastewater Treatment Plant. Bob Ekblad saw 10 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES on the 22nd at the International Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant
