This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, October 18th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On the 17th the BLACK-HEADED GULL was still at the north end of Spirit Lake in Jackson County along the Minnesota-Iowa border. Sixteen GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES were found near here along state highway 86 about three miles north of the Iowa border on the same day.

Four EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were at the intersection of Houston County Road 1 and Minnesota Highway 76 on the 11th. Check especially the pines by the farmhouse on the west side of the road.

The IBIS discovered last week was still at Hamden Slough, Becker County as late as October 12th. The location is the Hass Wetland along county road 104 about two miles northeast of the town of Audubon. This is an immature bird and is most likely a White-faced Ibis.

On the 17th a male MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was reported from the Louisiana Swamp area of Scott County. Go southwest from the main parking lot along the Mozamoni trail for about 100 yards.

Unusual was the single BOHEMIAN WAXWING reported in Scott County near Jordan, also on the 17th. The location was two miles southwest of Industrial Boulevard along Park Avenue.

In Clay County Peder Svingen found a FERRUGINOUS HAWK at the Felton Prairie. It was found along the "longspur" road on October 12th near the natural gas pipeline on the west side of the road. From the intersection of Minnesota Highway 9 and Clay County Road 108 drive six miles east on 108 and turn south past the large gravel pit.

There were two and possibly three SURF SCOTERS at Lake Ripley in Meeker County on the 13th. They were seen from the boat launch on the east side of the lake just south of Litchfield. Several Surf Scoters and a few WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were on Lake Superior in Cook County on the 18th.

A number of additional late fall migrants turned up along the north shore of Lake Superior this week. On the 14th, Dave Benson saw a PINE GROSBEAK near Independence in St. Louis County, and Mike Hendrickson reported an adult THAYER'S GULL from Knife River in Lake County. There were a few isolated reports of BOHEMIAN WAXWING, along with several more of AMERICAN PIPIT, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, SNOW BUNTING and LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and Mike Hendrickson found a SHORT-EARED OWL at 40th Ave West in Duluth.
