Over the last couple weeks I've been treated to several of those =
"Nature" moments that make birding so richly rewarding beyond simply =
counting and adding to lists:
*watching a male Yellowthroat at Schaefer's Prairie dutifully feeding =
its squawking "baby" cowbird, which seemed nearly three times as big as =
its "parent."
**Immature Chickadees high in my backyard, with their parents as voice =
coaches and role models, practicing their chick-a-dee-dee and fee-bee =
songs, but only coming out with shrill, hoarse "buzzes" (although =
gradually improving each day).
***watching, along with the neighbor boys, a parent Rock Dove sternly =
(and literally) with voice and wings and beak pushing and prodding its =
pitifully protesting offspring out from under its safe and cozy roost =
under an eave on the roof, then chasing it all over the roof until it =
reached the peak, where the parent stood guard so that the young'un =
couldn't escape back down (which it tried to do several times). As of =
today, the young pigeon was still standing at the roof top, gathering =
its courage to finally take off. How did that parent know it was time =
for junior to fly the coop? And where is that video camera when you =
really need it?
